How to Find the Model Number of an A-5 Browning
The Browning Auto-5, or A-5, is a semi-automatic shotgun. To determine exactly what model of Browning A-5 you have, you must find the shotgun's serial number. The serial number might be composed of just numbers, or of numbers and letters. The serial number indicates the year the gun was released, as well as the exact A-5. The model number contained within the serial number varies in location, length and composition. Some model numbers are three digits long and are at the tail end of the serial number, while other model numbers are two letters and are in the middle of the serial number.

1
Point the barrel of the Browning A-5 away from you and in a safe direction. It might be preferable to point it toward the ground.
-
2
Turn the Browning A-5 shotgun over, so the underside or belly of the gun is exposed.
-
-
3
Look for the serial number of the Browning A-5 on the belly of the receiver, slightly forward of the loading port. The loading port is the area of the gun where the bullet is loaded and waits before it is released.

4
Write down the serial number.

Go to Browning's "Auto-5 Semi Automatic Shotgun" Web page (see Resources section) and compare characters in your A-5's serial number with any of the model numbers provided. For example, if the serial number contains the letters "FT" after the number "2000," then the Browning A-5 model is the "Final Tribute 12-Gauge edition." If the shotgun has a 10-digit serial number that ends in 151, it's a Magnum 12-Gauge. A 10-digit serial that ends in 161 is a Magnum 20-Gauge Browning A-5 model. One that ends in 221 is the Sweet 16 model edition of the Browning A-5.
