How to Change Mime Type Icons in KDE 4.2

The Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol is used to identify different types of data being transmitted based on their meta data. This allows applications to automatically claim certain MIME types and open them automatically, along with letting the operating system distinguish from and treat certain MIME types differently. One common MIME setting is the icon attributed to all instances of a particular file type. Using the built-in tools of the KDE desktop environment after version 4.2, you can easily change the icons for MIME types.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "K" in the lower-left corner of your desktop, then click "System Settings" to launch the global settings dialog. Click the "File Associations" option, then the "Common Appearance and Behavior" category.

    • 2

Scroll through the categories and sub-categories to find the MIME type you want to edit, then click the association in the list to view additional options.

    • 3

Click the "General" tab, then click the "Mime Type Icon" to open a file browser. Find the new image you want to use for the icon on the hard drive. Click "OK" to apply the changes.
