Unplug any connecting strings of lights, if applicable, and test each string of lights individually. Put the working strings of lights aside so you can concentrate on those with the burned out bulbs.

    • 2

Examine the bulbs and wiring. If you notice damage to the socket or exposed electrical wires, discard the string of lights. If you notice a bulb that looks black or smoky, it's possible that's the one that is burned out and you can try replacing that one to see if it fixes the problem. If you notice a bulb that is loose, try pushing it back in.

Look for a fuse near the bottom of the strand, close to the plug. If all the lights are out, replacing the fuse may fix it, especially if the fuse looks black or smoky.

Test the bulbs with a light bulb tester rather than testing each socket with a new bulb to find the ones that are burned out. It's easy, less likely to cause damage in the process, and works well when more than one bulb is burned out. Follow the directions that come with your bulb tester. For example, some bulb testers are placed over each bulb, then a button is pushed. If it the tester lights up red, the bulb is bad and needs to be replaced.
