How to Make a Large Bow Christmas Tree Topper
Pick your favorite style and color of Christmas ribbon and turn it into a simple and elegant bow to use as a tree topper this year. A homemade bow is an ideal Christmas tree topper if you use the ribbon as a garland for your tree as well, or if you prefer a bow instead of the more traditional angel or star tree toppers. Choose a ribbon that matches the style and size of your tree. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Cut a piece of floral wire measuring about 6 inches long and set it in a place where you can reach it easily. You will use this later to hold the bow together.
-
2
Roll off enough ribbon from the spool for one of the tails on your bow. You could use a short tail of less than a foot so the bow is just at the top of the tree or make the tail the full length of the tree for a larger decoration.

3
Pinch the ribbon with your finger at the point where you will create the center of the bow.
-
4
Create a loop of ribbon extending out from the center and back into the center. The length of ribbon used to make the loop should measure about four times the width of the ribbon. For example, if your ribbon is 3 inches wide, use 12 inches of ribbon to make the loop.
-
5
Pinch the first loop in place in the center of the bow while you create another identical loop extending in the other direction. Add the end of that loop to the ribbon you are pinching tightly in the center.
-
6
Make more loops, with one in each direction, until you have as many as you would like. You should have a minimum of three loops in each direction; more loops will result in a fuller bow.
-
7
Create a small loop using a length of ribbon equal to twice the ribbon width. This will make the decorative center of the bow.
-
8
Wrap the floral wire tightly around the center of the bow that you have been pinching together. Wrap the wire twice around the ribbon and then wrap the ends of the wire to one another to secure it.
-
9
Cut the ribbon from the spool so the second tail is the same length as the first one.
-
10
Spread the loops of the bow apart and shape them into appealing fluid curves balanced around the center of the bow. Shape the smallest loop so it points outward from the bow and hides the floral wire in the center.

Tips & Warnings
If the ribbon has one side that is prettier than the other, as is the case with some types of velvet ribbon, twist the ribbon a half turn before making each loop so the pretty side faces out.
