How to Create a Rule to Ping an ISA Server From the Internet
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server features firewall and caching proxy services for use primarily between the Internet and private networks. Security best practice for configuring a firewall or proxy is to disable "ping" or "ICMP echo" replies on the external or Internet interfaces so would-be attackers are less likely to find the ISA server and private network. However, when troubleshooting connectivity issues, it is essential that ping replies are enabled to verify that the ISA server is reachable from remote locations. Configure a special packet filter in the ISA Server Management utility that allows ICMP ping replies while troubleshooting connectivity issues.

Log in to the Windows Server computer using the username and password of an account that has administrator permissions on the server. Click the "Start" button on the PC desktop, click "Programs," point to "Microsoft ISA Server" and click "ISA Server Management." The ISA Server Management window will appear.

Right-click on "IP Packet Filters," then click "New" and click "Filter." Enter a name for the new filter in the "IP Packet Filter name" box and click "Next." Select the "Allow packet transmission" radio button and click "Next." Select the "Predefined" radio button, then click the drop-down box and select the "ICMP ping query" option. Click the "Next" button.

Click the "This ISA server's external IP address" option, type the ISA server external IP address into the field provided and click the "Next" button. Click the "All remote computers" radio button and click the "Next" button.

Click the "Finish" button. Repeat this procedure for each external IP address hosted by the ISA server.
