How to Transfer a Maryland Teaching License to Delaware

How to Transfer a Maryland Teaching License to Delaware thumbnail
Teachers licensed in Maryland who wish to teach in Delaware must obtain a Delaware license.

All states require public school teachers to obtain some level of education, take a basic skills exam and pass a background check in order to receive the license required to teach. Many states have reciprocity agreements with other states, allowing teachers to follow an easier process to become licensed elsewhere in the U.S. Licensed Maryland teachers who wish to get a Delaware teaching license benefit from such an agreement.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Meet testing requirements. If you hold a full, current license from Maryland, you can skip this step. However, if you have a provisional, expired, temporary or otherwise limited/restricted license, you need to demonstrate your ability in mathematics, reading and writing. You can take the state's Praxis I exam, submit scores from other standard tests such as the SAT or GRE or a combination of the two.

    • 2

Apply for a Delaware license. The Delaware Department of Education uses an online system. You will need to create an online account and then fill out and submit the forms.

    • 3

Provide necessary documentation. Once you fill out the online application, the Department will provide you with a checklist of required documents. Depending upon your background, these may include transcripts, test scores and other forms.

    • 4

Monitor your progress. Your online account should indicate if you are missing documents or if your application is under evaluation. Check the site periodically to see if your status changes and promptly submit any required materials.

    • 5

Renew the license on schedule. Maryland teaching certificates are valid for five years, but Delaware's are only valid for three. Plan accordingly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Delaware allows teachers with pending licenses to apply for employment, so you can apply for jobs before you actually receive the license in the mail.
