How to Replace an EGR Valve on a 1984 Mercedes C280
You may find it necessary to replace the EGR valve on your Mercedes because of poor running conditions or issues with exhaust emissions. The EGR valve helps your car burn fuel more efficiently. If it is not working correctly, your gas mileage will be far less. The EGR valve will also help your car run cleaner. Plan to spend about an hour to change the EGR valve on your '84 Mercedes C280.
Things You'll Need
- Combination socket wrench tool set
- Scraper tool
- New EGR valve
- New gasket

Find a flat surface to work on your Mercedes and set the parking brake.

Pop up the hood and find the EGR valve near the back of the engine compartment. The EGR valve is positioned on the driver's side of the engine. It is a round, metal device and has a vacuum hose connected to it.

Pull the hose off the top of the EGR valve by hand.

Use your socket set to remove the two bolts that secure the EGR valve to the engine. Pull the EGR valve away from the engine and remove it.

Clean the surface on the engine where the EGR valve was connected with a sharp scraper tool.

Take the new EGR valve and the new gasket and put the bolts through the EGR valve while sliding the new gasket onto the bolts.

Attach the EGR valve with the new gasket to the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket set.

Re-attach the vacuum hose to the top of the new EGR valve.
