How to Recycle Styrofoam Plates

Styrofoam products can be tricky items to recycle. Styrofoam is the trademark name given by the Dow Company for Polystyrene. Many recycling centers do not accept Polystyrene because it is a highly flammable material. Fortunately, there are a few different options that will help you to recycle your Styrofoam plates and prevent them from ending up in landfills. Does this Spark an idea?

      Go to the Earth911 website and type in "Polystyrene" and your ZIP code, city, state or address into the search bar at the top of the screen. Earth911 will provide you with a list of recycling locations in your area where you may mail or drop the Styrofoam plates off to be recycled. Not every recycling center is eqsuipped or willing to take Styrofoam products for recycling, so be sure to use a center that is provided by Earth911.

      Reuse the Styrofoam plates. Wash the plates with soap and water and store them for later use. You can cut up the plates and use them for packing material when shipping items, or use them to create crafts.

      Donate the Styrofoam plates to a craft store. Wash the plates with soap and water first and then bring them to a craft store. Many stores hold crafting events for children and adults and can use the plates to make a variety of crafts.

      Mail the Styrofoam plates to the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers (AFPR) center. The AFPR accepts all types of Styrofoam products and it will safely reprocess and reuse the products to reduce waste in the environment. Mail your items to:
