How do I Install a Clutch Kit in a 1989 Honda Civic? thumbnail
The clutch assembly is the heart of the stick shift.

The clutch on a 1989 Honda Civic clutch gradually shifts engine torque to the transaxle by linking a clutch disc to a pressure plate. When these parts wear down, shifting may become choppy, difficult and erratic -- and may lead to total clutch failure. Install a new clutch disc and pressure plate, found in a clutch kit, when shifting exhibits these symptoms.

Things You'll Need

  • 1989 Honda Civic clutch kit

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the negative battery cable, lift the 1989 Honda Civic on a flat, hard surface, and remove the manual transaxle. This is a difficult procedure that should be accomplished before installing a clutch kit.

    • 2

Locate the exposed flywheel. This is a large toothed gear nearest the engine block. The new clutch disc will be installed on top of the flywheel, with the new pressure plate being installed on top of both.

    • 3

Slide the holes on the clutch disc, and then the pressure plate, onto the dowels of the flywheel. Push the two discs against the flywheel, keeping the pressure plate closest to you.

    • 4

Locate the splined hole in the plate assembly and insert a clutch disc alignment tool.

    • 5

Take the existing bolts and tighten them through the pressure plate. There are six bolts in a hexagonal formation--they must be tightened one at a time in a crisscross manner. Turn each bolt twice with a torque wrench before moving to the corresponding bolt. End with 20 foot pounds in each bolt.

    • 6

Remove the alignment tool from the discs and, if used in the removal of the clutch disc and pressure plate, the ring gear holder.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to access the clutch assembly in a 1989 Honda Civic, the manual transaxle must be removed. This is a very difficult procedure that must be accomplished before the clutch is accessed for installation of the clutch kit.

  • Clutch discs are often made with asbestos. Wear a breathing mask and never use pressurized air in cleaning the disc assembly. Asbestos is harmful to the lungs. Take extreme caution in lifting the vehicle as the vehicle may slide of its jacks at anytime.
