How to Promote Hand Washing
Whether in a business or in schools, getting everyone to wash their hands after using the bathroom is a big deal. However, simply telling people to do it may not be enough. You can set up an environment that promotes and encourages hand washing, however, in common bathroom areas by preparing a positive, clean environment that will help people feel comfortable enough to stay longer and practice proper hygiene.

1
Clean the bathroom from top to bottom. Make an environment that not only looks clean, but feels clean. The goal is to make people feel comfortable to stay in the room and not rush out the door as fast as they can.
-
2
Maintain and refresh the bathroom multiple times throughout the day. Schedule maintenance through the day to change supplies and wipe down surfaces. This maintenance will help people feel clean and practice hygiene by taking the time to wash their hands.

Look at the types of hand washing supplies you provide in the bathroom. Change liquid and solid soaps with a foam soap. Use soaps with no scent or a light, pleasant scent. Anything that is offensive to the nose should be avoided. Think about soaps that are hypoallergenic and for sensitive skin. Make soap labels that advertise the type of soap that's being used and its benefits, if any.

4
Change out all old soap dispensers with hands-free soap dispensers. If using towels, paper or fabric, change them out with hands-free hand dryers. The less people have to touch or do, the more likely they will take the time to wash their hands. Make the experience fast and simple.
-
5
Hang posters that advertise proper hand washing and its benefits. Visual reminders are the simplest and clearest way to promoting hand washing. Think about humor over clinical. People don't want to be told to do something, but if they stop to read and think about something, they are more likely to follow the direction. Make sure all signs are clean and in visible areas like next to sinks, facilities and doors.
