How do I Remove Chlorine Gas From Chlorine Cylinders?

How do I Remove Chlorine Gas From Chlorine Cylinders? thumbnail
Keep pool water treated with a chlorine cylinder purged of chlorine gas.

Chlorine cylinders, or automatic chlorinators, inject chlorine directly into a swimming pool's water supply, which sanitizes the pool and keeps water safe for swimmers. Chlorine cylinders pull water from the pool plumbing through their interiors which are filled with chlorine, then return the water to the pool plumbing. Over time, air or chlorine gas may build up in a chlorine cylinder, causing the system to become air or vapor locked. Removing chlorine gas from the cylinder frees up the system and prevents damage caused by the pump not pulling water. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Unscrew the lid of the chlorine cylinder slowly until you hear the hiss of air escaping the device. Keep far enough back from the cylinder to avoid inhaling any of the chlorine gas built up in the device. Typical cylinders such as a chlorinator holds very little gas, but take every precaution to avoid inhalation such as wearing a protective mask.

Turn on the pool's filter and pump. When the pool is operating water flows through the plumbing into the cylinder, and this water pushes any air or gas in the cylinder up and out through the loosened lid.

    • 3

Run the pool until water drips out of the chlorine cylinder's lid. Screw the chlorine cylinder's lid back on tightly by hand. Move over to the pool pump or pool jets and ensure water is flowing through the pool correctly. If water flow has stopped in the pool altogether, more air is in the chlorine cylinder. Repeat the purging process until water flow is normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purge any air and chlorine gas that has built up in your chlorinator weekly to eliminate pressure problems in the pool.

  • Chlorine gas is dangerous if inhaled in large quantities. Wear proper face protection when purging chlorine gas from chlorine cylinders.
