Door handles on a car can get broken or damaged over time or with excessive force. Not being able to use a door handle on your car can get tricky. Many car owners find that opening the door from only the outside is impractical and annoying. Replacing a damaged inside car door handle is simple to do if you know how to use a screwdriver. This project can be completed in one to two hours.

Step 1

Remove the inside door panel from the car door. Unscrew the Phillips screws that hold the panel in place. In some cases there will be small plastic clips holding the panel in place; use a flathead screwdriver to pop the panel out of the clips. Work carefully so you do not damage the panel.

Step 2

Unhook the old door handle from the long handle wires in the door. These wires in the door connect to the pull mechanism of the handle. The wires should slip off the door handle with a little help.

Step 3

Unscrew the door handle from the car door with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle from the door.

Step 4

Set the new car door handle in place. Screw it to the door with the Phillips screwdriver and the old screws from the old door handle.

Step 5

Connect the door handle to the door handle wires in the door. Test the handle to ensure that it works.

Step 6

Replace the door panel and screw it into place.
