How do I Remove the Steering Wheel on a 98 Chevy Truck?

There are times when you may need to remove the steering wheel from your Chevrolet pickup truck. You may want to obtain access to some of the wiring behind it, do some auto repairs in the area, or you may want to replace an airbag that has deployed. Depending on the model and year of your truck, you may need to remove the wheel cover from underneath or by prying the cover off from above. Whatever the case, the procedure can usually be accomplished within an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your Chevy truck on level ground with your wheels facing forward. Disconnect the ground cable from your battery by pulling the negative ("-") cable directly off the terminal.

    • 2

Look at your truck's steering wheel to see if it indicates that there is an airbag. If there isn't an airbag, remove the retaining screws that are located under the steering wheel with a Phillips screwdriver or pry the steering wheel cover off with a slotted screwdriver. It depends on the year and model of truck you have.

    • 3

Find the holes on the underside of your steering wheel, if your truck does have an airbag. Use a slotted screwdriver to release the wheel cover spring retainers that are located in these holes. Grab the cover, remove it from the wheel, and put it to the side.

    • 4

Remove the snap ring and retaining nut on the steering column shaft with a socket wrench. Be careful not to hit the steering wheel column as you work, as it is constructed to collapse in an impact.

    • 5

Use a pencil or permanent marker to make a mark on the steering wheel and the steering wheel column shaft so you will know where to line the two up when you put it back on.

    • 6

Attach a steering wheel puller to the wheel, and remove it from the column.
