How to Remove a 4x4 Tire Hub

The tire hub on a 4x4 vehicle includes the tire hub bearing on the inside of the hub, designed to allow the hub to move smoothly on the axle while the vehicle is moving. Occasionally, dirt can get inside the bearing and cause severe damage to the bearing and tire hub. You can remove the tire hub on a 4x4 in about an hour or two and thereby save time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the parking brake of the 4x4 vehicle and place a wood block behind one of the rear tires. Loosen the lug nuts on the tire you need to remove one complete turn with a tire tool.

    • 2

Lift up the vehicle with a floor jack and slide a jack stand underneath the axle next to the tire. Lower the vehicle so that it rests on the jack stand. Take the floor jack out from under the vehicle.

    • 3

Unfasten the top and bottom bolts on the brake caliper with a socket wrench and slide the bolts out by hand. Take the brake caliper off the rotor and remove the brake pads from the caliper.

    • 4

Suspend the brake caliper from the vehicle frame with a wire hanger to keep it out of the way. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake line.

    • 5

Remove the cotter pin on the end of the axle with a pair of pliers and slide the crown washer off the axle. Unfasten the axle nut with a crescent wrench. Remove the screws that secure the rotor to the wheel hub with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Take the rotor off the tire hub and remove the nuts on the back of the hub with a socket wrench and socket extension. Turn the steering wheel to give you room to get to the nuts on the back of the hub.

    • 7

Pull the tire hub off the axle with a wheel hub puller. Remove the tire hub from the 4x4.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always set the parking brake of the vehicle to prevent it from rolling while you remove the tire hub.
