How to Achieve My Career Goals & Take Control of Distractions

It is important to identify exactly what you hope to accomplish and what, specifically, is keeping you from achieving your career goals if you are serious about reaching them. Once you pinpoint these goals and distractions, you have to constantly bring them to mind. If they are on your mind all the time, you are more likely to take steps to accomplish them.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of your career goals that are realistic, attainable, specific and measurable. For example, instead of saying that you want to become the greatest salesman ever, write that you want to earn $5,000 in sales in the next year. You will be able to more easily see yourself achieving a specific goal than a broad goal that does not have any time constraints.

    • 2

Write another list of the things in your life that are causing you distraction. The act of writing the distractions down will help you identify and classify them. Pick the things that are most distracting to focus on eliminating or downplaying in your life. However, carefully weigh if those distractions are really distractions or if they are an important part of your life. For example, you may not consider your family to be a distraction to eliminate or downplay.

    • 3

Create a list of specific goals to help you downplay or get rid of those distractions. For example, instead of hanging with your buddies on a weeknight, write that you will stay at the office an extra hour and meet them afterwards.

    • 4

Post these goals in a prominent place where you will see them daily. This will help remind you to pay attention to your career instead of the things that formerly distracted you from it. When you find yourself wondering what the football game score is or what pair of shoes to buy when you are shopping, think instead about your goals. Reflect on each one you listed. Doing this throughout the day on a regular basis will help you focus your efforts on attaining those goals.
