How to Trim a Rose Tree
If you have a rose tree in your yard, you can trim or prune it yourself to keep its form. Also known as rose standards, rose trees became widely used in Victorian Europe and are comprised of a traditional rose grafted onto a piece of cane to form a tree. You can purchase a rose tree in a variety of different types. Although most rose trees are pruned in the same manner, special consideration should be taken based on the type of rose that is grafted to the cane. Does this Spark an idea?

Prune your rose tree during a dormant period, such as late winter.

Trim away any dead or damaged wood. Remove any crossing stems or fragile growth to create a stronger tree.

Cut the top of each branch back until it's approximately 6 to 8 inches long. Always cut above an outward facing bud. Create an angle in the opposite direction you want the shoot to grow in as you cut. Follow the basic form of the original rose while you prune.

Tips & Warnings
The spot where the rose is grafted to the cane (where the bush begins) is the bottom of the rose.
Do not prune the cane or tree part of a tree rose.
Do not prune the main stock of the bushy part of the rose.
