Global positioning systems (GPS) use orbital satellites to determine the location of a device. In recent years, GPS functionality has been included in handheld devices and in mobile phones. Upon connecting to several satellites, the device is able to compute the signals and calculate an estimated location. Since the computations are done using a combination of signals and require at least three satellites, additional satellite signals and proper visibility will provide a more accurate location within up to 10 meters.

      Ensure that the GPS device is updated with the latest firmware and satellite data by visiting the company website and installing any necessary updates.

      Move to a known border landmark.

      Turn on the GPS device. Wait for the device to locate a signal and increase its accuracy. A good accuracy is within 10 meters.

      Locate the GPS latitude and longitude coordinates on the GPS device. This will depend on the make and model of the device, so refer to your user manual. Write down the coordinates. Some GPS have preinstalled software for saving a list of coordinates.

      Decide how many steps to take between measurements. A lower number of steps will provide more points and greater accuracy, but may depend on personal need and time.

      Walk the perimeter of the area and record the GPS coordinates. Take additional measurements at known border landmarks like boulders, trees or corners.

      Plot the coordinates on a paper map or with an application like Google Maps or the GPS Visualizer. Some GPS devices come bundled with plotting software and can automatically read the coordinate data saved on the device.

Tips & Warnings

  • GPS signals are dependent on satellite visibility. GPS devices work best in areas with a direct view of the sky. Better signals provide greater location accuracy.

  • This method provides a rough estimation of the border locations. For a more accurate plot, contact your local government survey and consult the land records that contain the border information.

  • If plotting the border of a large or wilderness area of land, prepare any necessary safety supplies before beginning the measurements.
