Problems with the engines can include the starter motor not operating.

Bombardier's Evinrude brand of outboard engines includes the E-TEC range. These motors feature low maintenance, including 300-hour run times with no inspections or adjustments. Many have fewer parts and 300-hour spark plugs. Problems with the engines can include the starter motor not operating, the engine itself not starting, idling problems and loss of movement. These kinds of problems can be corrected by following a few straightforward troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

Move the shift handle to "Neutral" if the engine won't start and the starter won't crank. Check for blown fuses and charge the battery. A spare 10 Amp fuse is provided by the manufacturer. The fuses are found under the engine and electronics cover. Pull down on the fuse connector clip to remove the dud.

Start the E-TEC properly if the starter cranks, but the engine won't start. Be sure the water intake screens are below the water line. Clip the emergency stop/key lanyard to a secure place on your clothing and make sure the other end is connected to the key switch. Turn the key switch clockwise to the "Start" position and turn the engine for up to 20 seconds. When the engine starts, release the key.

Look for kinked fuel hoses, or an empty fuel tank, if you continue to have problems starting the Evinrude E-TEC motor.

Turn the engine off, lift the outboard, and check for debris on the propeller if the engine won't idle properly. Check for a loose propeller hub, bent blades or a bent shaft if the engine runs, but the boat won't move forward.
