How to Convert Area to Acreage

Large tracts of land may be measured in acres.

Land area for larger tracts of land is often measured in acres in the United States. The unit "acre" originated in Great Britain. However, other units can also be used to measure land area, including the square mile, square yards, square feet and square meters. Knowing the conversion factor for each of these area measurements makes it simple to convert an area in a different unit to acreage.

Instructions

1. Multiply the number of square miles by 640 acres per square mile to convert the area to acres. For example, if you had an area of 4 square miles, you would multiply 4 by 640 to get 2,560 acres.

2. Divide the area as measured in square yards by 4,840 square yards per acre to change to acres. For example, if you have 19,000 square yards, divide 19,000 by 4,840 to find you have about 3.93 acres.

3. Divide the area as measured in square feet by 43,560 square feet per acre to change to acres. For example, if you have 109,000 square feet, divide 109,000 by 43,560 to find you have about 2.5 acres.

4. Divide the area as measured in square meters by 4,047 square meters per acre to change to acres. For example, if you have 30,000 square meters, divide 30,000 by 4,047 to find you have about 7.41 acres.
