How to Look for Ideas for a Business Name

Once you have an idea for a business, you need to actually name the business. Business names can be based on the owner, the industry or the product being offered. When developing ideas for your business name, come up with several different choices and then select the one that most feels right for your company. Your goal is to choose an appropriate name that is also memorable to your customers so they can easily recommend you to other prospective clients.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down your first, middle and last name. Create several permutations of your name such as using just your first or middle name, just your last name, a combination of initials or a shortened version of long last name. For example, Aaron Francis Johnson can be broken into AF Johnson, Aaron Francis, Johnson's or A Francis.

    • 2

Write down the industry your business is part of. Add a list of words that come to mind when you think of the industry. If your industry is baking you can write down "sweet," "cakes," "after dinner" and "indulge."

    • 3

Write a list of any words you can think of, regardless of the word itself. For example, the words "cyan," "lighthouse," hallow" "falls" and "wait." If you need help looking for words, open a book or magazine and select random words.

    • 4

Copy all of your words onto separate index cards. Include only one word, phrase or name per card. Spread all of the cards in front of you.

    • 5

Arrange the cards into different combinations using one to three cards per combination. For example, you might arrange the cards to read "Lighthouse Sweets," "AF Cakes" or "After Dinner Wait."

    • 6

Write down any combinations that work as a possible business name. Repeat with a new set of words. This will give you a list of potential business names to use for your company.
