Washing Instructions for Flame Resistant Materials

Flame-retardant, or flame-resistant, clothing is coated with a chemical that reduces the flammability of the garment and is intended to self-extinguish when removed from the source of the ignition, such as a house fire. Many workers, from electricians to pharmaceutical workers, wear flame-retardant clothing for protection in the work place. Many brands of children's pajamas are also flame resistant and should be washed properly in order protect the garments' flame-retardant properties. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the garments inside-out to help protect the flame-retardant coating.

    • 2

Place the garments in a washing machine set to a warm cycle. This will wash the pieces in water between 105 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which will not damage the clothing. Any temperature above 140 degrees Fahrenheit will cause damage and shrinkage.

    • 3

Add one capful of phosphate-free liquid detergent. Check the detergent's ingredients list to ensure it does not contain phosphates. Also avoid placing chlorine bleach, starches or softeners in the washing machine. These products coat the garments, reducing their flame-retardant properties.

    • 4

Turn the machine on, and allow it to run a full cycle.

    • 5

Remove the garments and tumble dry them on low, without any fabric softener sheets. Remove promptly from the dryer and iron on a low setting, if desired.
