How to Put in a Ground Rod thumbnail
You can put in a ground rod with a screwdriver.

Electric fences utilize two separate terminals. One connects to the actual fence while the second terminal connects to an item known as a ground rod. A properly set up ground rod sends an electric shock to a squirrel or other creature who attempts to bypass the fence when its body makes contact with the fence. To put in a ground rod, you need a clamp and screwdriver. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the ground rod approximately 7 feet in the earth close to your fence's terminal with a hammer.

    • 2

Insert a separate ground rod on the other side of your fence, if you have a big work area.

    • 3

Connect a ground clamp to the rods with your hands. Secure the clamps with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Attach the rod that sits closest to your fence to your charger's terminal with electrical wire.

    • 5

Combine your ground rods with copper grounding wire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use ground rods that consist of copper, rather than those of galvanized steel, because copper rods tend to withstand rust better and act as a superior electrical conductor.
