How to Get on Section 8 in Los Angeles
Section 8 in Los Angeles is handled by the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. The funding for the program comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Section 8 will pay a portion of your rent, depending on your income, directly to your landlord, reducing your overall housing burden. Even if you qualify, Section 8 in Los Angeles has a long waiting list, so you may not be able to get benefits for months or even years after you apply, unless you're deemed to have extreme need.

Navigate to the HACLA website (See Resources). Read the income limits based on family size. You must be below the Extremely Low or Very Low income levels to qualify for Section 8.
The Extremely Low income designation is given to families who earn 30 percent or less of the median area income. The Very Low income designation is given to families who earn 50 percent or less of the median area income. Low income families -- those who earn 80 percent or less of the area median income -- do not qualify for Section 8 help in Los Angeles unless owners are converting from a project-based program to a tenant based-program. The median area income changes yearly and varies depending on the number of dependents in the family. In 2010, it was $63,000.
