How to Disable the Backup Beeper in a Prius

The Toyota Prius hybrid car runs nearly silently, making it easy for a driver to forget that the car is running. An accidental shift into reverse when the car is running can be dangerous for drivers as well as pedestrians nearby. Toyota equipped the Prius with a reverse alarm that generates a beep inside the passenger compartment of the car when the engine is running and the driver shifts the car into reverse. You can disable the audible alert in minutes.

Instructions

1. Insert the key into your Prius and press the "Start" button. Press the odometer button until the current odometer reading displays.

2. Turn the ignition off. Press the brake pedal and turn the ignition back on. Watch for the "Ready" light to come on.

3. Hold the brake pedal to keep the brakes engaged. Press the odometer button and hold it for at least 10 seconds. Shift the car into reverse while holding the odometer button. Return the gear shift to "Park."

4. Release the odometer button. Watch the odometer screen for "B Off" to appear, confirming that the beep has been disabled.
