How to Change the Bulb in a Solar Light

A solar light often uses an LED, or Light Emitting Diode, bulb rather than a traditional light bulb because the light lasts longer and does not drain solar batteries as quickly. Light fixtures will differ depending on the solar light, but most are made for user friendliness in changing the bulb. In many cases, the bulb is changed similarly to a regular light bulb. Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the fixture.

    • 2

Unscrew any screws to remove a cover, if necessary. Take care not to damage any wiring that falls out when you remove the cover.

    • 3

Unscrew the original bulb. Remove the bulb in the same method as any other light bulb---the bulb itself should unscrew, usually to the left.

    • 4

Screw the new LED bulb into the fixture, turning it to the right. Tighten it carefully and then turn the switch on. Make sure the bulb is working and then turn off the fixture. Replace the cover, if there is one, taking care that any wiring is placed in its original position. Screw on the cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never change the bulb while the solar light is turned on. While the original bulb might not be hot because it is burned out, changing to a new bulb with the power switched to the on position can result in injuries and electric shocks. Solar lights gather energy from the sun, but they still use power to make the light bulb work.
