Instructions

    • 1

Place a flat pry bar edge under the molding on the side of the siding. If you cannot insert the pry bar under the siding, strike it with a hammer.

    • 2

Set a block of wood between the pry bar and siding. This will give you some leverage to pry the molding up. Push down on the pry bar to release the molding.

    • 3

Remove the entire molding. Clean the exposed area well. Make sure the surface is completely dry.

    • 4

Measure the area where the old molding was with a tape measure. Prepare the pieces of the new molding. Cut the edges that will meet at a corner at a 45-degree angle with a miter saw.

    • 5

Nail the pieces in with a nailset and finish nails: Set the tip of the nailset on the nail's head. Hit the nailset with a hammer to drive the nail into the molding. This method protects the surface and appearance of the wood. Space the nails a foot apart.

    • 6

Caulk the edges and any openings with exterior grade caulk. Paint it on with a brush. Smooth it with your finger.

    • 7

Paint the molding with exterior paint and a paintbrush. Apply at least two coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a clear day to work on your molding.
