Computer technicians are used in many different industries and applications, from technical support for a small business to maintaining a network for an enterprise company. Computer techs can be specialized in a certain area of computing or have a more general knowledge of computer systems and how to troubleshoot various problems. You can take many different paths to become a computer technician, from certification to formal education.

Work with computers on your own time, researching fixes for problems that you and your friends and family have. Get familiar with the common operating systems and programs used on computers, as well as the computer's hardware components.

Check out your local vocational technical school. Enroll in the computer technology program or an equivalent program if it is offered.

Enroll in a technical institute, career institute or community college program if you want to become a computer technician in the least amount of time. These programs are usually offered on a two-year basis or less.

Attain computer certifications such as A+ Certification, Network + Certification, Microsoft certifications and other certifications related to the computer field you are interested in. You can get certified in specific programs, technologies, operating systems and other specialized computer fields.

Send your resume to local tech companies, call centers, larger businesses with their own IT department, schools and other companies looking for computer technicians. Check the Craigslist site nearest your city for information technology jobs. Entry-level positions that you may pick up with your first job include customer service representative, desktop engineer and help desk technician. Use your networking opportunities that you may have gathered from school and certification to find other job openings.
