How do I Fix Glass in Clocks & Barometers?

How do I Fix Glass in Clocks & Barometers? thumbnail
The glass on any clock can be repaired with modern adhesive.

In the past, glass pieces from clocks and barometers were normally just replaced, but with new glues it has become possible to mend the glass itself. Glass makers use a special glue called E600 to mend fractured glass as it is capable of adhering to glass surfaces. For reattaching the glass to the wood or plastic that held it, use a two stage epoxy that can replicate the texture of whatever surface it is used on. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of latex gloves and safety goggles to protect your hands and eyes from errant shards of glass. Place all of the glass pieces on a flat surface. You may have to remove any pieces left in the clock or barometer itself. Be careful not to cut yourself.

    • 2

File down the broken edges of the glass work. The break in the glass causes many fractures that could re-brake if your do not file them away before gluing. Use light pressure on the file as too much may only serve to crack the glass more.

    • 3

Apply a light coating of E600 on the freshly filled edges of the glass work. Squeeze the edges together with a moderate amount of pressure and keep the pressure up for a few minutes. Lay the freshly glued piece on a paper towel and let it harden for half an hour.

    • 4

Place the glass piece on the clock or barometer face, checking for fit. The glass will not stay in by itself so you will need to use an epoxy. Pour some sawdust into the cap of a soda bottle and mix the epoxy and the sawdust together. Stir with a toothpick and then apply it where the glass touches the clock or barometer.

    • 5

Press the glass piece to the epoxied part of the clock or barometer and hold it firmly for a few minutes. If possible have the clock or barometer on its back so that gravity will pull the glass down and keep it in place. Let the epoxy set for half an hour before hanging the object.
