How to Add Color to Black & White Photos with Microsoft Photo

Black-and-white photographs captured on film often are more than pure black and pure white. For example, some photographs may have a cool blue tint to the white shades, while others may have a sepia cast. Black-and-white digital photographs may not have this same level of character, however, without a few adjustments. Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 is a free image-editing application from Microsoft. If you have this application on your computer, you can use the built-in photo color adjustment function to quickly add colors to a black-and-white digital photo.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011, and double-click the black-and-white picture to which you would like to add color. The picture expands and fills the center of the window.

    • 2

Click the arrow next to "Color" on the top of the window in the "Adjustments" section. The section drops down and displays the nine different color adjustments that Windows Live Photo Gallery can make to images.

    • 3

Hover your mouse over any of the nine sections of the "Color" menu. As you hover the mouse over each adjustment, your photograph changes to display a preview of how the adjustment will look.

    • 4

Click one of the nine adjustments to add the selected color to your photo.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also manually adjust the colors in a photo with Windows Live Photo Gallery by clicking the "Fine Tune" button at the top of the screen. Click "Adjust Color" on the right side of the window, and then use the slider bars to adjust the colors in your photo until the photo has the desired tint.
