When gas prices skyrocket, entrepreneurs begin frantically working on alternative sources. One of the many alternatives to fossil fuel engines is the hydrogen powered gas kits that attach to existing engines to help improve mileage and save you money on gas. Hydrogen is a relatively cheap fuel source as it is generated from distilled water. Some people fear using hydrogen because of the explosive nature of the gas. That fear can be overcome by learning how these kits work.

  1. How HHO Gas Car Kits Work

      Remove all parts of the kit from the box it came in. Set them on a table and find the hydrogen generation chamber. This will be the container that will hold the water and the electrical components. When electricity is added to water, which is an element made up of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, the hydrogen is separated from the oxygen molecules and escapes as a gas. This gas is flammable and can be explosive. The byproduct of burning hydrogen, however, is water vapor, not poisonous exhaust fumes.

      Insert the two metal pieces into the chamber. Most kits will label the metal pieces as being either positive or negative. The positive metal piece should be inserted on the side of the chamber closest to the ignition switch. Some kits will include what resemble glass plates, each labeled as belonging to the positive or negative side. It's the positive side that attracts the hydrogen molecules once the electrical charge is started. The negative side attracts the oxygen.

      Secure the HHO chamber to the inside firewall of your vehicle. The procedure for this will vary depending on the type of kit you purchase and the type of vehicle you install the kit on. The positive lead will run to the ignition switch or the battery while the negative lead will be grounded on the bracket you use to secure the chamber to the firewall.

      Connect the kit's vacuum hose to the air intake system. How you do this depends on which type of vehicle you are driving and whether it uses a carburetor or fuel-injection system. Consult the instruction manual for specifics. The hydrogen generated by the device is drawn into the intake system as a supplemental fuel of HHO Gas, or un-bonded hydrogen and oxygen. This process reduces the gasoline lost in fumes or evaporation.

      Mix a solution of distilled water and one teaspoon of sodium hydroxide that will fill up to the fill mark in the chamber. Pour the solution into the chamber. Some kits will have a removable cap on the top, and others will have a lid with clasps. Whichever it is, close the chamber.

      Connect the positive lead to the provided 10-amp fuse (some kits come with a 30-amp fuse) and connect to the ignition switch. Connect the negative lead to the bracket ground. Connect the hose that leads from the hydrogen chamber into the air intake area of your vehicle. The vacuum created by the air intake system will pull the hydrogen and oxygen gas, HHO, into the engine. When the engine is turned off, the process will stop generating HHO gas.

      Start the engine and let it idle a few minutes. As you increase pressure on the accelerator, the HHO gas intake increases. The drip that will eventually emerge from your exhaust tailpipe will be water. According to the claims for these kits, one quart of water will last for hundreds of miles, reducing your gas consumption and increasing your miles per gallon. Estimates suggest an increase of anywhere from 30 to 50 percent greater mileage than on gas alone. Keep a written log of your mileage and gas purchases and calculate the miles per gallon you get to check whether you are saving.
