How to Open Construction Bids

How to Open Construction Bids thumbnail
Construction bids can vary in competitiveness.

Construction bids are offers from contractors to do a job in the field of construction for a certain amount of money. Contractors provide bids in answer to bid requests, which can take a number of forms. Bids can be negotiated, which means that the price is negotiated between the company or individual and one contractor. They can also be limited competition, which means that the company or individual asks for multiple bids from a few select contractors. Open competition bids are open to all public contractors equally and are often requested by government or public companies or agencies.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow guidelines when opening a construction bid by making sure that all contractors have an equal opportunity, there is no favoritism involved and the work can be completed at the minimum cost.

    • 2

Write the notice for the open bid. Include information such as the form of bid, which means the way that the bid should be formatted and turned in. This will maintain that all bids look the same and cannot be judged based upon appearance.

    • 3

Include the name of the person or agency requesting the bid, the type of work, the location of the work, the estimated cost of the work and the time limit for the work being completed. All of this information is pertinent for requesting bids.

    • 4

Tell the contractors where they can find forms for bidding, further instructions, information on drawings and construction plans and the date and time the bids need to be turned in.

    • 5

Post the bid in a public space, whether a local newspaper or a government agency website. The information must be public in order for the bid to be considered open.
