Stronger muscles increase speed and power. These guidelines will help you develop the strength necessary to become a proficient martial artist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ankle Weights
  • Exercise Weights
  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Weight Benches
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Establish a thorough warm-up routine before working on any form of strength training.

  2. Step 2

Begin a weight lifting program to increase muscle mass. Make sure that you rest sufficiently between exercises to allow full recovery. The goal is strength endurance, not injury.

  3. Step 3

Perform exercises that require you to lift your own body weight. These include crunches, pull-ups and push-ups.

  4. Step 4

Use a heavy bag to practice kicks and punches at full power. Continue workouts in two-minute rounds with time in recover in between.

  5. Step 5

Try slow-motion kicking and punching in front of a mirror. Not only will you refine your technique, you'll also build strength as your muscles work harder to hold static positions.

  6. Step 6

Practice techniques through brisk repetition. As with techniques that increase speed, repetition increases strength endurance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Work with a fitness center instructor when you start a weight lifting program.
  • Knee injuries can occur if you bend your knees too much. A very low position brought about by squatting or bending the knees as much as possible is not advisable, especially when you use a load.
  • Stop any activity if you feel pain in the area being worked.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
