How to Polish Airstream Trailers

How to Polish Airstream Trailers thumbnail
Airstream Trailer Company is the oldest existing manufacturer of campers.

Airstream trailers are known for a gleaming aluminum exterior. The finish is warrantied against peeling for two years if the trailer is routinely cleaned and maintained as recommended. The aluminum panels are protected by a clear coat to prevent oxidation, but exposure to salt air or pollutants can damage the finish. Keep your Airstream shiny by frequently washing and polishing the exterior panels. Wash your Airstream every month and wax it every 10,000 miles or every six months to protect the finish and remove pollutants that cause rust.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the exterior with cool water to remove grit from the surface.

    • 2

Wash the entire exterior surface with a soft cloth or wash mitt dipped in a mixture of mild detergent and water. Move the cloth or mitt with the grain of the aluminum. Do not exert a lot of pressure when rubbing the exterior surface.

    • 3

Rinse the exterior surface thoroughly with cool water. Dry the trailer with a soft cloth or chamois to prevent water spots or streaking.

    • 4

Apply a thin coat of liquid wax or nonabrasive auto paste to the finish with a dry cloth to protect the shell from scratches and make future cleaning easier. Rub lightly in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry. Polish the exterior with a clean cloth to remove excess wax and give it a shiny finish.

    • 5

Polish gold-plated medallions on the exterior of the trailer with a mild metal polish and a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash and wax the Airstream more frequently if stored in an industrial area.

  • Do not use abrasive polishes or automatic dishwasher detergents. Avoid cleaning the exterior with wire brushes or steel wool. Abrasive cleaners or cleaning tools will damage the finish.
