Creating a Second Life group takes a little time and creativity.

When you create a Second Life account, you are given a virtual avatar. Your virtual avatar becomes a Second Life resident that you can use to interact with other residents and venues inside of Second Life. One of the most popular ways for sharing information in Second Life is through a group. A Second Life group is a platform used to communicate specific information to a large group of residents and Second Life venues at one time.

      Sign up with Second Life and create your virtual world account. You can sign up at the official Second Life website or with a third party website such as the Phoenix website. You will need a email address to create your Second Life account.

      Place a form of payment on your Second Life account. Second Life groups cost Lindens to create: Second Life currency that you can buy online at the official Second Life website. You can buy Lindens with your credit card, debit card or Paypal account that is attached to your Second Life account.

      Select a logo or picture for your Second Life group. Your logo or picture should reflect what your group is about. You can use photos saved on your computer, clip art or buy a royalty-free picture online at websites such as iStock Photo.

      Select a name for your Second Life group. Your group name should represent the overall theme of your group.

      Type a brief description of your group using your word processing or MAC pages. Include information about your group and your group rules.

      Log into the virtual world of Second Life using your avatar's name and password.

      Upload your logo or picture into your inventory inside of Second Life. Select "File" from the upper tool bar, this will activate a drop-down box. Hover your mouse over "Upload" from the drop-down box and click on "Image." To upload an image from your computer's hard drive to your Second Life inventory will cost L$10 Lindens.

      Click on "Local Chat" on the tool bar to open the communications box and click on "Contact" to open the contacts option. On the contacts option click on the "Groups" tab and click on "Create" tab to open the create group information box.

      Enter the information about your group in the group information box. Enter your group's name where it says "Type your new group name here." From your word document or MAC pages, copy your group information and paste it in the "Group Charter" section. Click on the "Group Insignia" to open your Second Life inventory and select your group picture or logo. Click on your group picture or logo from your inventory that is saved in your "Photo Album or Textures" in your inventory, and click "Select" to add the picture or logo to the "Group Insignia."

      Check the option you want for your group under "Group Preferences" in the group information box. Choose from the options provided: "Show in search," "Open enrollment" and "Enrollment fee L$." Using the drop-down box in the group information box, select if your group will contain mature content or PG content. Click "Select" to pay and activate your new Second Life group; a L$100 Lindens will be deducted from your Second Life account.

Tips & Warnings

  • Under "Group Preferences," check the box "Show in search." This will allow your group to be easily found when a Second Life resident searches for what your group offers.

  • Ask your current Second Life Friends to join your group.

  • Create titles for group members and for yourself.

  • Buy Lindens for your in-world Second Life account

  • If no one joins your group within 48 hours, your group will be deleted and you will not be able to use the name you have chosen for your group again in the future.
