How to Create Your Own Coffee Pods

How to Create Your Own Coffee Pods thumbnail
Make your own coffee pods to enjoy a single serving of your favorite blend.

Single-serve coffee makers can end up costing just as much as if not more than regular coffee makers when you take into account the individual pods you must purchase to make each cup of coffee. The single-serving coffee pods offered at the grocery store are often mediocre blends at inflated prices, simply because they come prepackaged in pods. Making your own prepacked filters of ground coffee beans is a convenient way to make an individual serving of coffee in whatever blend you choose. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring scoop
  • Jar or glass
  • Coffee filter
  • Ground coffee beans
  • Single-serving coffee maker

Instructions

    • 1

Center a coffee filter evenly over the bottom end of the jar or glass.

    • 2

Press the filter into the measuring scoop using the jar. Twist the jar into the scoop to get a tight edge in the filter for your pod.

    • 3

Remove the jar, leaving behind a cup-shaped filter inside the measuring scoop.

    • 4

Add about 2 tsp. of coffee to the cup-shaped filter, still inside the measuring scoop.

    • 5

Fold over the edges of the filter to completely cover the coffee by starting at one side and working your way to the other. The tighter and cleaner you fold the edges, the better the coffee pod will turn out.

    • 6

Place the jar or glass on top of the nearly finished product and push it into the scoop again using the palm of your hand. Press down hard on the jar to help everything form together tightly. This will also seal the pod so the coffee grounds do not fall out when you remove the pod from the scoop.

    • 7

Turn the scoop upside down and tap the bottom of it so the coffee pod pops out.

    • 8

Place the coffee pod into the pod holder face down. The side with the folds should be facing upward.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a stainless steel measuring scoop that fits perfectly or almost perfectly into the pod holder on your coffee maker. You will also need to find a jar or glass that fits into the measuring scoop. This doesn't have to be precise, but try to find one that fits as snugly as possible.

  • Never use too big a coffee filter. The excess material could cause your coffee maker to back up and flood.
