My VoIP & Router Is Not Working With SonicWALL

SonicWALL network security appliances inspect network traffic, blocking viruses, spyware and other intrusions. SonicWALL devices are configured to function as routers by default, and won't co-exist with an existing router and VoIP or other configured network applications. If you want the SonicWALL device's security protection added to an existing network, while still using the existing router setup, you can configure the SonicWALL device to function as a bridge. In bridged mode, the SonicWALL device inspects traffic. It logs it and blocks malicious traffic, while allowing full network access to routers and VoIP applications without additional setup.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the computers and VoIP devices to the local network ports on the back of the SonicWALL device.

    • 2

Connect the SonicWALL device's WAN port to one of the local network ports on the back of the router using a standard Ethernet cable.

    • 3

Connect the router's Internet port to the Internet connection.

    • 4

Type "192.168.168.168" into a Web browser's address bar on one of the computers connected to the SonicWALL device and press "Enter." Consult the SonicWALL device's manual for the appropriate IP, if this IP address doesn't work.

    • 5

Log in with the device's configured user name and password.

    • 6

Click the "Network" tab and "Interfaces" folder on the configuration page.

    • 7

Click the "Configure" icon to the right of "X1 (WAN)."

    • 8

Click the "IP Assignment" box and click "Static."

    • 9

Type "192.168.0.12" into the "IP Address" box.

    • 10

Type your router's IP address, for example "192.168.0.1," into the "Default Gateway" box. Consult your router's documentation for its default IP.

    • 11

Type your network's DNS server IP addresses into the "DNS Server 1" and "DNS Server 2" boxes. Consult your router's status page if you don't know these.

    • 12

      Click "OK."

    • 13

Click the "Configure" icon to the right of "X0 (LAN)."

    • 14

Click the "IP Assignment" box and click "Layer 2 Bridged Mode."

    • 15

Click the "Bridged To" box and click "X1."

    • 16

      Click "OK."
