1
Research local zoning laws regarding fences, gates and security requirements for swimming pools. The laws regarding the security of backyard swimming pools vary from place to place, so check with your municipal office or zoning board before installing any aboveground or inground pool.
-
2
Mark the area where you want to install the pool. Determine the dimensions for the pool, then determine how much space you want to leave between the pool and the surrounding fence. Include space for patio furniture, plants, decorations and other amenities. It is better to leave too much room than not enough, since it can be difficult and costly to move the pool fence outward.

3
Measure the deck on the back of your home if you have one. You might be able to create an entrance to the pool area directly from your deck. This design makes it easier for guests to go directly from your home to the swimming pool. It also allows you to use your deck as an extra lounging area and party space.

4
Check the area around your proposed pool and make sure you have access to electrical outlets. Ensure that you have an available grounded outdoor outlet for the pool filter before you start building your pool.
-
5
Consider the amount of direct and indirect sunlight the area receives. Choosing a shady area for your pool could interfere with the heating of the water and reduce the number of months you can use the pool. If your pool has a heater, this might not be a problem, but it can be a significant issue for an unheated pool.
