How to Tie Knots Step-by-Step
Being able to tie knots is an essential skill. Knots are used in a variety of situations, from camping to sailing and sewing, and even by the emergency services. There are a few different types of knot, which are useful for different situations, but learning how to do the three most common knots is an important and rewarding use of time.

Figure Eight Knot

Hold the rope vertically, with your hands about two inches from either end.

Make an underhand loop at one end of the rope.

Thread the free end through the loop, ensuring it enters over the rope rather than under it.

Pull tightly to form the knot.
Clove Hitch

Stand in front of a pole, and thread the rope behind the pole. Hold the two ends of the rope.

Cross the ropes to form a cross shape.

Thread the right side of the rope behind the pole again, in the same direction as before.

Tuck the end of the right side of the rope underneath the two pieces of rope wrapped around the pole and pull.
Overhand Knot/ Pretzel Knot

Hold the rope vertically, with your hands evenly spaced.

Create a loop near one end of the rope.

Pass the free end through the loop, so the rope becomes pretzel shaped.
