You can work as an online teacher or tutor from your home office.

Becoming an online teacher or tutor can be a fulfilling way to make extra money working from home. As an online tutor, you work with children who need extra help outside of school in order to excel in their education. The process involved in becoming an online teacher or tutor is moderate in difficulty; the main requirements are that you have a high-speed Internet connection and that you are well educated in the particular subject you will be tutoring.

Instructions

    • 1

Search the Internet for available teaching and tutoring opportunities. There are a wide variety of different sites dedicated to providing online tutoring services to students, many of which are always looking for new tutors. It is important to note that each site has its own set of requirements you must meet in order to work for them. Most require that you possess at least a high school diploma or a GED, and some require college education or teaching certification. Some sites cater to specific academic subjects, so look for sites that offer services in a subject you are qualified to teach or tutor.

    • 2

Fill out an application for each of the tutoring sites. As an online teacher or tutor, you generally are considered an independent contractor and have the freedom to work for multiple tutoring sites. Applying for multiple sites increases the likelihood you will be hired by at least one site; you can make more money if you work as a tutor for more than one site.

    • 3

Take and pass any placement tests required by the sites during the application process. Almost all tutoring sites require you to take at least one test before being hired in order to prove that you are familiar enough with the academic subject to teach or tutor in that subject. Each site has a different number of tests you must pass before they will consider employing your tutoring services.

    • 4

Fill out any contracts, tax forms or other legal documents required by the tutoring site that hires you. Each site has a privacy agreement you need to sign regarding protecting the privacy of the students. As an independent contractor, you probably will need to sign a 1099 tax form that will hold you responsible for withholding your own taxes and Social Security.

    • 5

Download any programs and software required by the tutoring site. You will need these downloads in order to gain access to an online classroom where you will work with students.
