How to Organize a Mechanic's Tool Box thumbnail
An unorganized toolbox can slow down your work day.

Wasting large amounts of time searching for a specific tool can slow down your work pace. Having an organized toolbox can really cut back on wasting time looking for a hammer or screwdriver. Mechanics have a large number of tools and keeping them organized may seem difficult. Once you have your toolbox organized in a specific order it will be easier to keep it that way. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the tools and miscellaneous items from the toolbox. Lay out all of the tools in a row. If you have duplicate items, lay them together.

    • 2

Do an inventory of your items. Consider how often you use a specific tool, if it is broken or if you have multiple tools just like it. Look for duplicates and only keep one of each tool. If you have a duplicate item, then place it into a new toolbox. If you have multiples of an item, then consider selling one or giving one away. Set aside all of the tools you will not be placing back into your toolbox.

    • 3

Wipe out the toolbox with a dry cloth and wipe off all of the tools as well. If you must rinse off any of your tools make sure they are completely dry before placing them inside of your toolbox to avoid water damage to your tools.

    • 4

Place the tools your use frequently in the top drawer or top level of the toolbox. If your toolbox has a removable tray, remove the tray and then place the items inside of the tray.

    • 5

Place less frequently used tools into the lower level of the toolbox or lower drawers. The bottom drawer should store tools you do not use as often. You may also need to place any large items into the lower areas, as those areas tend to have more storage room.

    • 6

Place the tray back into the toolbox if your toolbox comes equipped with a removable tray.
