How to ID Authentic Vintage Escada Sunglasses

Anyone shopping for vintage couture sunglasses understands that obtaining authenticity is more difficult than it is when purchasing a new pair. However, with a little bit of knowledge, identifying authentic vintage Escada sunglasses is achievable. One of the best places to look is a trusted vintage shop; reading reviews of the shop online can be helpful. Knowing that other customers have found authentic pieces at a particular store makes the chances much higher that you'll find what you are looking for. The same goes for purchasing online: check reviews first. Escada sunglasses have major identifying marks, allowing authenticity to be determined before purchase. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the price. Escada is a couture brand, meaning that even in vintage, authentic sunglasses will still carry a substantial price tag. If the sunglasses seem absurdly inexpensive, the chances of authenticity are low. While vintage Escada may not be as expensive as a brand-new pair, the price differential should not be immense.

    • 2

Check for an authentic label. The label is everything when identifying vintage Escada. The trademark symbol for the brand is two capital "E"s facing inward, toward one another. Typically shown in a serif font, although some of the more modern Escada sunglasses do have a sans-serif font, the top and bottom of the "E"s should touch. The symbol is typically done in metal, even if the frames are made of plastic. If the Escada label is on the side of the glasses, make sure there is minimal chipping and that the words are imprinted in the frames, not simply painted on.

    • 3

Find the authentication numbers. Authentic couture Escada sunglasses will have a product label on the inside left arm. There should be five separate imprints on the left arm. First, the brand name, then the product number, followed by the style, the color/frame name and a final identifying number.

    • 4

Inspect the glasses for a high level of quality. Even if the sunglasses are vintage, the condition should not deteriorate dramatically. Watch out for chipped paint, bent metal or excessive wear on the frame. Also check the weight; couture sunglasses from Escada should carry some weight in the palm of your hand. Because of the high quality Escada produces, if the glasses feel too light, they may not be authentic.

    • 5

Ask for a certificate of authenticity. If possible, try to obtain a certificate stating that the sunglasses are truly authentic Escada. Purchasing from a vintage store or online may make getting a certificate difficult. Ask if other sunglasses come with a certificate; if most of the sunglasses or items sold come with a certificate but the item under discussion does not, be wary. However, some vintage stores simply do not have access to certificates. If the glasses meet most standards given, but the certificate is the only piece missing, this should not deter you from purchasing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take a photo of the Escada logo with you when shopping. Use it as a basis of comparison.

  • A magnifying glass will show minor imperfections and allow you to tell if underneath a chip is metal or plastic.
