How to Make Homemade Oyster Stuffing
Homemade stuffing can enhance a range of meals, both casual and for special occasions. Whether you're making a holiday dinner or simply want to add something decadent to an ordinary family meal, a homemade dish of oyster stuffing is sure to please. Homemade oyster stuffing combines the traditional flavors of cornbread with an array of herbs, spices and smoked oysters for an added treat. This recipe doesn't take long to prepare.
Things You'll Need
- 3 cups stale cornbread
- 1 cup Italian herb bread crumbs
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 3 tsp. diced garlic
- 1 8 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 8 oz. can smoked oysters
- 1 8 oz. cup shredded colby-jack cheese
- 4 qt. mixing bowl
- Sharp knife
- Aluminum foil
- 4 qt. roasting pan or casserole

Add the stale cornbread to the mixing bowl (use cornbread that isn't sweet). Crumble most of the cornbread into crumbs but leave some of it in large chunks for texture.

Add the Italian seasoned bread crumbs to the cornbread, then add the onion, garlic and cream of mushroom soup. Mix it thoroughly to create a creamy, thick, lumpy mixture.

Drain the can of smoked oysters. Discard the juice.

Cut each oyster into tiny pieces. And the pieces to the mixing bowl. Stir the mixture thoroughly so the oyster pieces are evenly distributed.

Pour the oyster stuffing mixture into a casserole dish or roasting pan. Cover it liberally with the shredded cheese. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on top. Bake the stuffing at 375 degrees F for about 35 to 40 minutes. This fully cooks the stuffing and melts the cheese adequately.

Oyster stuffing makes a nice side dish to a holiday dinner of turkey or ham, but it goes well with almost anything.
