Veronicas come in many sizes - from ground covers to 2-foot plants. The summer flowers are on spikes and come in white and shades of blue and red. Taller veronica varieties make good cut flowers.

Choosing Veronica

Step1
Look for plants at nurseries in spring and summer.
Step2
Buy veronica in 4-inch to 1-gallon containers.
Step3
Choose healthy-looking plants with signs of new growth in leaves and flower buds.

Planting Veronica

Step1
Plant veronica in full sun in well-drained soil.
Step2
Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
Step3
Place the plants no deeper than they were growing in the containers.
Step4
Set the plants 9 to 12 inches apart.
Step5
Mulch around but not on top of the plants with 3 inches of organic compost.
Step6
Water well until soil is completely moist.

Caring for Veronica

Step1
Deadhead (cut off old flower stems) with scissors or bypass pruners for repeat bloom.
Step2
Remove old foliage in spring, using bypass pruners to cut off old stems.
Step3
Apply a light application of organic fertilizer on top of the soil in early spring; follow package directions.
Step4
Mulch around but not on top of the plants with 3 inches of organic compost in spring.
Step5
Water well weekly until soil is completely moist in summers with no rainfall.
