How to Use Process Colors in Printing

How to Use Process Colors in Printing thumbnail
Printers process cyan, magenta, yellow and black colors together to produce many other colors.

Manufacturers build cost-saving features into color printers, but unfamiliar and unaware users might get confused by these options. Modern color printers use a four-color process to produce many other colors, but users can disable three colors to prevent printing from those more expensive cartridges. If a new user needs to print in color, however, he or she might be perplexed as to why the printer is only printing in black-and-white or grayscale. If this is your predicament, you can easily access printer settings to produce processed-color printouts.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" on the taskbar at the bottom of the Windows desktop. Click "Devices and Printers" from the "Start" menu.

    • 2

Right-click the printer. Select "Printing Preferences" from the menu.

    • 3

Click the "Color" tab, or a similarly labeled tab.

    • 4

Click to fill the radio button or check box next to "Color." This will automatically change the machine from printing in grayscale or black-and-white.

    • 5

Click to remove the check mark from the box next to grayscale or black-and-white printing, if the previous step did not apply to changing to color. Click a check mark next to the color option.

    • 6

Click "OK" to save the changes. Print a test page to verify that the printer has been reset to print out in processed colors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Navigate to the printer manufacturer's support website to download the user's manual and specifications.

  • Additionally, explore the advanced options in a printer's preferences that allow users to adjust photo color quality, such as "photo quality" vs. "mixed quality."
