How to Level a Camper

How to Level a Camper thumbnail
After towing your camper into position with a truck, you must level it.

Campers range from simple designs featuring little more than a warm place to sleep to fancy rigs with full appliances and plumbing. To safely stay in a camper, it is important for the camper to be properly immobilized and then leveled, to ensure that the weight of the camper is properly distributed and that the camper will not roll away.

Instructions

    • 1

Place wheel chocks before and after all the wheels of the camper. This will prevent it from rolling.

    • 2

Unhitch the camper from the tow vehicle.

    • 3

Place the level atop a horizontal surface on the camper and examine the air bubble, which will move to the higher side of center and give a reading in inches that shows how off level the camper is.

    • 4

Place leveling blocks beneath where the stabilizing jacks for your camper descend on the side opposite the direction the bubble moved. One block is needed for every two inches of offset in the level reading.

    • 5

Lower the stabilizing jacks of your camper so that they are helping support the weight, but the wheels also are supporting weight.

    • 6

Check the camper with the level again, and make adjustments to how far each jack is lowered until the camper is level.
