How to Decorate With a Console Floor Model TV, Fireplace & Sofas in a Family Room

Arrange the family room to suit your family's activities.

Most family rooms are casual environments where families relax together, play games and watch television. Decorating your family room can be a challenge if you have a console floor model TV, a fireplace and more than one sofa to arrange in the space. Your choices ultimately depend on the amount of available floor space and on the primary activities in the room. For example, if your family loves to play interactive games using a gaming console, open floor space is a must. Optimize your family room decor based on how your family uses the space.

Instructions

1. Place the console floor model TV at the end of the room opposite the fireplace. Position the sofas facing each other on the two walls adjacent to the fireplace and the console TV walls.

2. Arrange the console floor model TV on the wall to one side of the fireplace, if the fireplace is centered on the wall. If the fireplace is in the corner, place the TV in the opposite corner of the same wall. Arrange the sofas in the family room in an L configuration or facing each other with one on each wall adjacent to the fireplace and console floor model TV.

3. Create two separate seating areas in your family room by placing the sofas back to back in the center of the room. Place the console floor model TV on the wall opposite the fireplace. One sofa faces the fireplace and the other faces the console floor model TV.

4. Place the two sofas in an L formation in one corner of your family room opposite the fireplace wall. Place the console floor model TV along the wall adjacent to the fireplace. Select the corner for the L-shaped sofa configuration based on the placement of the doors and windows in the family room. Select the wall for the TV based on optimum viewing from both sofas.

Tips & Warnings

• If you place the console floor model TV on one side of a center fireplace, anchor the wall on the other side of the fireplace with floor to ceiling bookshelves or a console table. Placing objects on each side of a center focal point creates a focal wall. If you use bookshelves to anchor the space, hang shelves on the wall above the console TV.
