Large rubber items, like exercise balls, can have a strong smell fresh out of the package.

New rubber can have a strong, chemical smell. When placed inside a home, the smell can overpower the room. Unfortunately, only time and fresh air can completely dissipate the smell. However, cleaning the rubber can make the smell fade faster. Air out the rubber or air out the room as much as possible and continue to clean or treat the rubber until the smell is manageable. • 2

Spray the cleaning liquid onto the rubber surface. Rub in the cleaning solution, using a soft cloth.

    • 3

Dampen a soft cloth in cool water. Wipe the cleaner from the rubber.

    • 4

Allow the rubber to air-dry in a well ventilated room, or outdoors.

    Baking Soda

    • 5

Mix equal parts baking soda with water in a bowl. As you mix the ingredients, a paste will begin to form. If the mixture is too watery, add more baking soda; if the mixture is too thick, add more water.

    • 6

Add a half-dollar-sized portion of the paste onto a soft cloth.

    • 7

Rub the paste into the rubber. Allow the paste to dry on the rubber and absorb the odor for approximately an hour.

    • 8

Dampen a soft cloth in cool water. Wipe the paste from the rubber.

    • 9

Allow the rubber to air-dry in a well ventilated room, or outdoors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Baking powder and vinegar absorb odors. Place 1 cup of either in a small bowl and position a couple of bowls around a room to help conceal and neutralize the rubber smell.
