Add new files to a flash drive by deleting old content.

A flash drive is a data storage device that connects to the computer via USB. While flash drives are removable and rewritable, there is no guarantee that deleted files cannot be restored. If you wish to securely and permanently erase the files stored on a flash drive, you must have a format utility that works with the computer's operating system.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the flash drive into the computer's USB port.

    • 2

Download and install a format utility onto the computer. Reboot the computer once the installation is complete.

    • 3

Open the format utility. Click "Start" and then "All Applications." Locate the flash drive from the "Device" or "Drive" drop-down menu.

    • 4

Click "Options" and then "Erase." Select "Block Erase" or "Secure Erase" to initiate the procedure.

    • 5

Click "Format" or "Start" and then click "Yes" or "OK" to begin erasing. Click "Done" or "Finish" once the confirmation screen appears. Close or exit the format utility. Remove the flash drive from the USB port. You have now erased a flash drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure there are no files of importance on the flash drive before erasing it completely.
