How to Make a Wreath for Spring

Spring flowers provide inspiration for a wreath design.

Wreaths are common Christmas decorations but can work well at all times of the year. A spring wreath hanging on your door is a lovely way to welcome guests to your home. Store-bought wreaths can be expensive, so try making your own using a few basic supplies, some of which you may already have. Making your own wreath means you end up with something completely personal. These wreaths also make great Easter gifts for family and friends.

• Silk flowers
• Decorations
• Grape vine or straw wreath base
• Ribbon
• Hot glue
• Twist tie
• Scissors or wire cutters
• Floral tape

Instructions

1. 

   The tulip is a pretty spring flower.

   Choose the main color for your wreath; go for a pretty spring color such as pink, yellow or lilac. You may want to base your spring wreath on one particular type of flower, like a tulip or a rose.

2. Gather your silk flowers together, choosing different flowers that compliment each other. Artificial flowers are available at flower stores, department stores and even WalMart. Silk flowers that come in a group on one base stem are a good value, as you get several flowers that look good together. The quantity of flowers you buy depends on the size of your wreath base and whether you want it to be completely covered in flowers.

3. Gather additional items to add to your spring wreath, such as ribbons and artificial butterflies. Visit your local craft store for inspiration. Choose items that are small enough to be easily attached to the wreath base. You may want to create a themed wreath; go for nature, gardening, Easter or children.

4. Place your wreath base on a flat surface that gives you plenty of room to work on, like a kitchen table. Wrap ribbon around your wreath and tie it tightly in the back, or use a small dot of hot glue to keep it in place. Add the twist tie to the top of the underneath section of it, so that you can hang it up when you're finished.

5. Take the store tags off the flowers, and cut them to a shorter length (4 to 6 inches is a good length for a medium-sized wreath base) with scissors or wire cutters. Wrap floral tape around the stems.

6. Arrange your flowers on your surface in groups, accordingly to their color or type. This allows you to see exactly what you have to work with. Beginning with one group, stick them into the wreath base one at a time. Choose whatever pattern you like, but try to make sure it is balanced.

7. Add your ribbons, butterflies or other decorations. Either tape them onto pieces of stem that you have cut from the flowers, or hot glue them directly onto the wreath base.
