How to Reform an AFO Brace

An ankle-foot orthoses, or AFO, is a foot brace indicated to correct drop foot secondary to neurological conditions, injury, or mild knee instability. Secure fit is crucial in treating conditions of the foot and ankle. The foot requires an angle of at least ten degrees to maintain balance while standing. Discomfort and balance issues are most commonly caused by an improperly fitting brace Reforming your AFO brace will allow you to achieve proper fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Grind the foot plate of the AFO to fit the contours of the foot. You can grind into the strut a maximum of one centimeter.

    • 2

Trim the footplate at the toe end. This will relieve pressure on the side of the leg caused by improper foot placement.

    • 3

Buff all of the edges of the brace that have been cut or ground until they are smooth.

    • 4

Add additional padding to the AFO brace. The amount of padding and placement is dependant upon the comfort of the user. The anterior portion alongside the tibia and on the medial strut covering the malleoli are the areas that typically require the most support.

    • 5

Insert an insole on top of the foot plate to achieve a greater angle. The insole will lift and angle the foot to provide balance.

    • 6

Put on the brace to check the fit. The brace should be snug but should not pinch the skin.
